Rhys Abbruzzese scored a vital winner from the spot for Haverfordwest County at Pontypridd United

JD Cymru Premier – Phase 2 Playoff Conference

Pontypridd United 0 - Haverfordwest County 1

Rhys Abbruzzese kept his nerve to score an 88th minute winner from the spot for Haverfordwest County against Pontypridd United at the USW Sports Park.

This result ensures Haverfordwest County stay in prime position, three points clear at the top of the Phase 2 Playoff Conference table.

After a goalless first period the defining moment came just two minutes before full time. A long ball over the top saw substitute Iri Humphreys taken down by goalkeeper Ashley Morris for a definite penalty. Up stepped Abbruzzese who coolly made no mistake from 12 yards and there was no way back for the deflated Dragons.

Jack Karadogan had an early sight at goal as the Dragons’ front man fired over the crossbar from just outside the 18 yard area.

Minutes later Bluebirds’ skipper Ricky Watts’ first time shot from outside the area narrowly missed.

Jack Wilson’s low throw was met by a glancing Lee Jenkins header which keeper Ashley Morris tipped over the bar.

After the interval the Bluebirds continued to press as Jack Wilson latched onto a through ball but was denied by Morris who quickly came off his line.

Wilson picked up a knock in a collision with Morris and was replaced by Iori Humphreys.

There was late drama as Humphreys was taken out by Morris in the area as Abruzzese stepped up to mistake from the spot to ensure Tony Pennock’s men had a Good Friday in Treforest.
